Second Chances


This week, the reflection I had was caused by my weekend trip to Gdańsk. I went there with my parents, who once studied in Gdynia, and used to visit Gdańsk’s old town on regular basis - but it was 20 somenthing years ago. Since then the only place they’ve been to in Gdańsk was the Long Street and one or two close to it, because they never really planned on spending more time for visiting the old town, as they were so sure there’s nothing more worth seeing than the places they go to. Now, after so much time, they (and I) have spent more than an hour in this city’s old town and were simply charmed by its beauty, style, and atmosphere, especially the riverside, which they always thought was not worth seeing, because 25 years ago, from when they remembered it it wasn’t. This led me to a conclusion, how commonly such scheme can be seen - Judgement once set isn’t so easy to be change, which may cost you losing some many incredible aspects of life just because you once got a bad impression of something and never found enough energy to give it a second chance.

    This is very true especially dangerous when our opinions concern people. A stereotype once formed is often unbreakable.

    I think the worst thing about this is that it's incredibly difficult to "give" someone this energy to give something a second chance. People often trust their old experiences more. I wonder if there is a simple way of convincing someone to try and check out something again to see if it's any better than it used to be.

    I think, that loss of time and disappointment when it turns out sth/sb didn't change is what disencourages people from giving the second chance.

    Also, you often tell many people your negative impressions from the past what can stop them from seeing something amazing. The stereotype can influence many lifes.

I know that so far I've been writing more of new technology and it's impact on our lives, or its presence in it, but this article will be a little different. Yesterday, while strolling through the internet, I stumbled upon a few videos regarding Aging and current ongoing studies which are aimed to stop aging, or at least slow it down. Even though none of the techniques have been tested on humans yet, the results are very promising. After the trials on model organisms - mice - the preliminary results show that we could increase our lifespan by up to 40-50% or if we are succesful, maybe even double the maximal possible age of human being. According to that study, we could also free ourselves of the majority of diseases and illnesses resulting from our body's malfunctions and cell fatigue, like i.e Alzheimer, or heart failure. Driverless Cars - the way to get rid of traffic?

Some time ago I watched a TED talk about a concept of automated transport world. In that utopia humans wouldn’t waste time in traffic jams, nor would they waste time having to to get to and from public transport like subway, tramways or some future transportation method. The main principle of that concept were driverless cars, which would enable us, the commuters not to waste time driving our vehicles, but rather to spend it doing our work, paying attention to kids, or anything we want just like in the 2009 sci-fi movie „The Minority Report” . All this sounds as if it was way down the road right? Well, it turns out it’s just around the corner! Companies like Google , Uber or Tesla have been working on this undertaking for quite a while and have very promising results. Why in the age of science do so many people believe in supernatural things?

In my humble opinion, the main cause for people’s belief in supernatural things is their lack of understanding of science that denies them. Present-day science is so complex, and so difficult, that It can’t be understood by each of us alone. That’s why whole world develops it, but it should be whole world’s scientists job as well, to deliver it to plain citizens. To make them understand it, even simplified, so that people didn’t need to turn to belief in supernatural things to explain phenomenas. When we make the society aware of science that lies in the basics of our world, people might abandon those silly beliefs. There is much truth to those words... None of known science would be discovered if not people who wondered about unknown...
