Driverless Cars - the way to get rid of traffic?

Some time ago I watched a TED talk about a concept of automated transport world. In that utopia humans wouldn’t waste time in traffic jams, nor would they waste time having to to get to and from public transport like subway, tramways or some future transportation method. The main principle of that concept were driverless cars, which would enable us, the commuters not to waste time driving our vehicles, but rather to spend it doing our work, paying attention to kids, or anything we want just like in the 2009 sci-fi movie „The Minority Report”. All this sounds as if it was way down the road right? Well, it turns out it’s just around the corner! Companies like Google, Uber or Tesla have been working on this undertaking for quite a while and have very promising results. All of them have developed so far fully functional driverless cars, which are said to be „substantially safer than that the ones driven by humans”. Tesla has already started retailing them, with other companies being on its tail. In fact, right now you can’t find a big company that wouldn’t invest in autonomous cars, or wouldn’t intend to do so. It’s the future. And everybody on the market sees it.
Unfortunately, there must be the downsides. With driverless cars being so dependent on GPS system, and electronics as a whole, it’s very vulnerable to GPS system's malfunction, or malware attack. Also it only is 100% reliable if we exclude human error variable. And for now it’s impossible - we don’t have solely driverless cars on the streets.

So, the bottom line is - driverless cars are the inevitable part of the future, which happens to be closer, than we think, but, as everything, we need to take it with a little dose of reserve until it’s fully introduced.

  1. To be honest, I would be scared stiff to travel in a driverless car. I don''t trust the technology which can be so easily hacked into. Not to mention the fact that driving a car is a pleasure, too.

  3. It looks like an invention that could help humans a lot, but people's mentality would have to change. I think only few could put so much trust in artificial intelligence nowadays.

  4. In my opinion it's just an another step we have to take to become more advanced species. It seems scary because we rely on AI but don't we do it already with all our personal data we put on the internet and lets say automatic pilot in planes? How you see it? is it good or not so much?
