Daylight

In recent days, as we are nearing the shortest day of the year, and the night falls quicker and quicker, I couldn't help but wonder about how strong are our lives tied to daylight. Every year when the day gets shorter, we get lazier, less productive, less active in general. I observe this on the example of myself, but not only. As we get to this time, when it's 4pm and it's already dark outside everybody thinks of the same - when at this time in summer we were just heading off the beach, or going out to spend some time on fresh air. It doesn't matter that we no longer have to rely on daylight, as we have artificial light, because the need for sunlight is so deeply embedded in our nature as humans we cannot bypass it.

  1. This proportion is even said to cause states simillar to depression in Scandinavian countries. They do many researches in this area and have came up with some intersting ideas to overcome it. I've heard about bright rooms which are supposed to improve your frame of mind and make your body function better (some people claim it helps the a lot but it might be as well just a way to earn money - spending an hour in such room isquite expensive). They also adjust the design in offices and at their homes to minimize the unwanted influence of their climate on their productivity. Unfortunately, many Nordic people still complain about the bad influence of deficient amount of sunlight on their bodies and minds in winter.

  3. Don't Scandinavian people have a paid holiday in winter when they are supposed to go abroad to a sunlit country? Also, a compulsory 'light therapy'? These schemes seem cheaper than coping with widespread depression in the society.
