Graphene - Revolutionary material of future

Can you think of spy technology from sci-fi films? You know, things like cameras in contact lenses, or several-milimeters-sized bugs. Or maybe you dream of a phone with a battery you can fully charge within minutes? Well, all those, and many more can be achieved using graphene. First  curious thing about it is that it’s the first material ever discovered, that is just two dimensional. Well, sort of - it’s as deep as one atom, so that’s why scientists say it’s 2D. What also makes it so amazing, and widely anticipated are its many amazing features, like extreme durability, or superconductivity, or that it’s also super flexible and half-transparent, and what’s most important - as it’s jus allotropic variation of carbon, it’s quite cheap in production! Knowing that, we can see that its uses are practically limitless! It's possible to build microscopic electronic circuits or transistors, and some day even all those thing mentioned earlier in the text. To be honest, studies on subject of graphene are ongoing on practically every important university, and more and more results are released all the time. Most recently, Samsung unveiled that it’s developed garphene-based battery that could power a smartphone for whole day, and would only require 12 minutes to charge. 12 minutes! think of it. And what if we applied this to electric cars or planes? It could be finally that crucial point in the battle between traditional and renewable energy sources, and hopefully after graphene being introduced into common use our shift to earth-friendly technology could be propelled enough, to save our environment just in time.

  1. Wasn't it a team of Polish scientists that first discovered (or created) graphene? I have a vague recollection from a few years back.

    1. Yes, they did. Although they haven’t discovered the material itself, they came up with a new efficient, And cheap technique to create it on industrial scale. In addistion to that, graphene created with their technique was much purer than the one synthetised in the old ways.
